ILAS2015 - AILU's First Call for Abstracts

The Industrial Laser Application Symposium (ILAS), organised by the Association of Laser Users (AILU), provides a biennial opportunity for those involved in the use and development of Laser Materials Processing (LMP) to present their work and showcase their products; with the aim of stimulating further technological and applications developments and an increase in the use of LMP.

Centre to present progress on National Strategy at Manufacturing the Future Conference

The Centre Director, Duncan Hand, will present an update on the development of a UK National Strategy for Laser-based Manufacturing at the EPSRC Manufacturing the Future Conference, in Glasgow on the 23rd & 24th September.

The Centre will host a plenary session titled "Laser-based Manufacturing: Towards a National Strategy for UK Growth" including presentations from Stewart Williams and Ken Lipton, Rofin-Sinar UK and concluding with an update on progress towards the National Strategy.

Consultation on the UK Roadmap for Laser-based Manufacturing Applications

A Roadmapping Workshop was proposed by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes (CIM-LbPP) and the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU), and organised in partnership with the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) at Cambridge University, using Roadmap-Workshop methodologies the Institute had previously developed.

Detecting toxic hazards in a split second

A portable laser device is being developed at Heriot-Watt that can instantly identify chemical hazards, increasing the safety of emergency services and military personnel.

In an emergency scenario or military operation there can be uncertainty over whether liquids or gases are toxic, causing delays. The new laser technology could rapidly identify substances, meaning those in charge can decide whether the situation is safe or whether they need to start decontamination procedures.

The Centre partners with SU2P for Horizon 2020 Workshop

The Centre for Laser-based Production Processes in partnership with SU2P is hosting a workshop to prepare for Horizon 2020 calls in High-throughput Laser-based Manufacturing.  SU2P is an innovative bridging project connecting Scottish and Stanford Universities through industry-academic interaction and entrepreneurial activity in photonics.

The workshop will:

Centre Director to present update on National Strategy

Professor Duncan Hand will present an update on the National Strategy in Laser-based Processes at the AILU organised event 'Innovations for Economic Growth: The UK Uptake of laser materials processing' at the MTC in Coventry.

The event will be held on the 8 July and chaired by Professor Lin Lee and Clive Grafton-Reed.
