Jonathan Shephard’s research covers: Development of novel optical fibres for flexible high power laser delivery, Technologies for integrating lasers into manufacturing processes and novel robotic devices, High power lasers for precision machining, Adaptive optics to tailor light to specific industrial applications, Optical non-destructive testing and, Novel laser processes for medicine. With collaborators he has successfully developed hollow silica microstructured fibres for mid-IR medical lasers to replace articulated arms and in association with clinicians is applying these to develop new minimally invasive surgical procedures. Dr Shephard is also a founding member of the EPSRC Early Career Forum in Manufacturing Research.
