Robert Maier’s key expertise lies in the areas of bulk and fibre optical technologies for engineering applications, metrology, sensing and manufacturing. His research is centred on the application of fibre optic sensor technology to SMART materials with a focus on high temperature applications. Sensors are embedded into structures (polymer and metals) using Additive Manufacturing technology such as Selective Laser Melting. Robert develops fibre optic sensor technology for high precision point and distributed measurements using interferometry and fibre Bragg gratings. Laser based manufacturing and process monitoring by spectroscopic means such Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy is another focus of his research.
