Professor Derryck Reid

Professor Derryck Reid is a Deputy Director of Heriot-Watt's Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences and leads a research group developing new sources of femtosecond optical pulses, and their application to real-world problems in microscopy, metrology, spectroscopy and materials processing.  Specific research interests relevant to the EPSRC Centre concern the scaling of powers from femtosecond lasers to high average output powers.

He has an h-index of 27, including articles in Nature Photonics, Science, Applied Physics Letters and Optics Letters.  His current research is supported by DSTL, DCG Systems / IARPA, NPL, the European Commission, the Leverhulme Trust and the STFC.  He has filed 5 patents and co-founded the femtosecond laser company Chromacity Ltd.

Reid is Director and PI of the EPSRC Industrial Doctorate Centre in Optics and Photonics Technologies and the Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics, two £5M doctoral training grants which include 30+ industrial partners and collectively provide training for 100+ EngD students.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
