CIM-Laser Annual Report 2014-2015

CIM-Laser is pleased to announce the publication of it's second annual report. The Report provides an overview of the research, innovation and outreach happening in the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes. In this report we are proud to highlight activities and achievements from the first two years of operation, and outline our plans for future years.

Centre researchers get networking

The Centre's researchers held their second networking meeting at Heriot-Watt University in August, including an industry partner visit to Coherent in Glasgow.  

Each participant updated the team on progress in their project, while the Centre offered seed-corn funding to initiate new research ideas through feasibility from the researchers - can't wait to find out what they have planned!

'Manufacturing the Future' - full programme released

The fourth EPSRC Manufacturing the Future Conference will be held at the University of Cambridge on 17 and 18 September 2015, at which some of the UK’s leading academics, industrialists and senior government representatives will discuss how new research and government programmes can support the needs of the UK’s key manufacturing sectors.

All speakers throughout the conference have been asked to focus on the following thematic challenges:

Krste Pangovski featured on the cover of 'The Laser User'

Centre researcher Krste Pangovski is featured in the summer 2015 edition of AILU's magazine 'The Laser User'.  Krste and Bill O'Neill present their Centre work on sensing and process control in the article 'A new way to diagnose and optimise laser-material processing operations'.

Stewart Williams to present at AILU laser and electron beam welding event

Laser and electron beam welding are widely accepted manufacturing techniques for a wide range of industrial applications. Both technologies have their advantages and disadvantages, and traditionally these have defined the applications which they are most suitable for. However, on-going developments in both laser and electron beam technology are increasing the overlap between the technologies. As such, there are an increasing number of applications which are considered suitable for both laser and electron beam welding.
